Moving services in Hamilton to a new house is a stressful time. There are so many small and big things to think about, it is easy to lose track and that can make things even more stressful. If you already know when you are closing on your new place you have no time to lose. Scheduling the move of certain services sometimes needs to be done weeks or even months in advance to avoid interruption of service. Phone, Internet, and Cable (or satellite) are the 3 major services that can often be an issue to move. For one, you want to keep them up until the last minute at your existing place, but you also want to have them available as soon as you walk into the door at the new house.
Water services are usually transferred per request of the title company - at least in the area where I live. I think this has to do with water rights and rights against the property in case the water bill is not paid by the previous owner. Power and gas services need to be transferred by you as they do not have the same rights compared to water.
Other things to think about are waste, newspaper, and other in-house services like milk delivery. These services usually can be changed upon the last minute. You also need to contact the United States Postal Service to have your mail forwarded. These days this can be done through the Internet at the USPS.com website. Mail can be forwarded up to 6 months, however as soon as you are moved in and have your new permanent phone number (in case you cannot transfer the old one) you should contact all companies you deal with and let them know about your new address. Often when you get a bill, the payment form has a field where you can notify them about the new address. Personally I did not have much success with that and I prefer to call them up and make the change "in person" so to speak.
Inform your credit card companies about your new address at the same time when you inform companies that charge your credit card on a recurring basis. Since those companies will use your address and zip code to get the payment approved, a mismatch with what the credit company has on file can be an issue. Especially American Express is very picky about these things. Order new checks as soon as possible as they often need 2 weeks before they are delivered. Some check companies provide free address labels which comes in handy when mailing payments. I also recommend to get a cheap address stamp from Office Max or Office Depot to make it easier with all the extra postal mailings that will most likely happen. It is amazing that even in these days of electronic data delivery paper and snail mail play such an important role.
Conclusion: Act early once you know you are moving services in ST Catharines. The more work you get done early on, the less stress you have once the moving date is finally there.
